The movie portrays vampires as ordinary beings rather than the romanticised immortals or blood-thirsty creatures of the night that they are conventionally seen in this type of movies. A blood specialist, played by Ethan Hawke and a reluctant vampire encounter a group of surviving humans. For reasons that are to be revealed, they agree to help save the humans from extinction.
