How To Make Money On The Web

Before I decided on the title for this article I wrote down a list of options: how to engage an audience, how to affect change, and how to alter perceptions and change attitudes. All of which are valid, and all of which are important to you as a business owner or marketing manager.

The trouble is, most busy, results-oriented business owners and managers want quick, simple answers to complex marketing questions that involve psychological and sociological issues. Buying a mobile phone, makeup, or a car is more complicated than which option provides the most features at the cheapest cost. Even if that was someone’s intent, it’s a purchasing strategy that is defeated by the myriad of confusing and conflicting feature packages offered: you can get this with that, but not that with this, unless you get the other thing you don’t want, and of course whatever you do want costs a lot more. To clarify the situation you can always consult the specifications with the help of an engineer to explain them to you, or you could read some user-generated consumer reports that were probably written by some paid shill or someone with way too much time on their hands. As a last resort you could just buy the one that comes in the nicest color.

What gets lost in all the paradox of choice, technological hype, and fad-marketing confusion is no matter what you sell, tanks or toilet paper, it’s people who buy it, even if those people work for mega corporations that order in container-load quantities. People are frustrating after all, it’s hard enough negotiating where to go for dinner with your friends, so what chance do you have of convincing strangers to part with their hard earned cash. As a result blogs and newsletters present a steady diet of search engine optimization, social networking, and link building tactics with some mobile marketing thrown-in. It’s not that these things aren’t important marketing tactics, it just that they are tactics not strategy, and in order for companies to maximize their marketing impact and sales, they must implement a broader more complete marketing approach that deals with the issues that trigger buying decisions and customer loyalty.

A System’s Approach To Web Marketing Development

There are three reasons why people use the Web: access, content, and communication. These are the critical elements needed to build a Web-based business. The Web has become vital to business because that’s where the customers are, both business-to-consumer and business-to-business. The Web is important because it provides access to a huge international audience. And the reason the audience is there is because the Web is the largest depository of content the world has ever known. All of which wouldn’t be of much value if it was all hidden away in some gargantuan library instead of being easily, and for the most part, freely accessible to send and receive; making it the most efficient communication environment ever devised. From a system’s perspective the Web provides input, process, output, and feedback, a classic business system’s model.

We can all get a little carried away with the latest marketing trends and technological solutions but when all is said and done a Web business strategy must be based on delivering content in the form of text, images, audio and video in informative, entertaining, and above all memorable presentations that influence perception and trigger action.

Everyone understands businesses have to make money in order to survive, but all too often companies waste valuable resources following trendy techno-fads that don’t deliver meaningful, memorable content that influences market behavior, creates brand awareness, delivers service support, promotes positive public relations, generates leads, or increases sales.

Confessions of a Social Networking Misanthrope

There are two basic financial website models, sites that provide niche content that uses advertising as its revenue source, and sites that provide content about the products and services they sell. If you’re in the business of selling eyeballs to advertisers you want as much website traffic as possible; but if you’re in the business of selling merchandise or expertise, you really only want interested traffic. In other words, if you sell anything other than advertising you only want traffic that might actually buy what you sell.

Of course there are hybrid sites that want it both ways, they sell a service and provide a blog that contains advertising in order to support the effort. The trouble is the advertising bleeds off a lot of traffic, the very thing the content was intended to attract in order for the company to prove its expertise and thus gain new clients. And with today’s sophisticated behavioral advertising these ads can be sending visitors to indirect competitors even if direct competitors have been restricted. Even if the advertising is totally non-competitive, it is still a distraction drawing people away from your ultimate objective of gaining new customers.

This notion of distraction has even led to a new trend that supports putting all hyperlinks at the end of a presentation rather than spreading them throughout, which has been the norm and often recommended practice. The current thinking on inline hypertext links is that they are distracting and get in the way of the message so they should be relegated to the bottom of the page and used for reference purposes only.

Advertising sites want traffic, and any traffic will do; product and service sites want an interested audience. When all is said and done it’s not traffic that website businesses want, it’s awareness, engagement, and leads.

You Have To Influence Your Audience

It may not be trendy, and it sure isn’t easy, but if you want to make a pile of dough, you have to influence your audience, you have to change perception, alter attitudes, target emotions, and facilitate positive change.

I know, I know, you only sell shoes or the thing that fits inside the thing that turns the other thing that you don’t sell, but all that doesn’t matter because whatever you sell you can make a difference if you stop worrying about traffic and the latest social networking fad du jour.

And that statistical analysis that arrives in your in-box only tells you what happened, not why; it presents only a sterile snap shot of history, it doesn’t foretell the future; otherwise we’d all be driving flying cars, wearing Dick Tracey watches, and have so much free-time they’d have to legalize polygamy just to keep us busy.

Successful companies change the way we think and ultimately the way we act, and it usually revolves around the consistent communication of a simple idea or concept. Ever heard of a company called Apple? Wasn’t it the firm that all the Wall Street stat-geeks and techno-wizards told us just couldn’t compete and was going to go broke not so long ago; so much for blind statistical analysis.

When Apple first introduced the Mac they talked about a computer that was “convivial,” meaning enjoyable due to its ease of use and quality of design. And with that guiding principle Apple has changed how we design things, how we communicate, how we listen to music, how we view video, and they’re on their way to changing how we read books, newspapers, and magazines. Apple has not just influenced its audience; it has changed society. Oh yah, they’re now the computer company with the largest market capitalization, and it’s all because they stuck to their core philosophy and message, and presented it in clever, meaningful, memorable marketing campaigns.

Business Websites are Communication Platforms

Poor communication is worse than no communication at all. Poor communication kills trust and credibility. You may be the greatest expert in widget technology or software engineering but if you’re a poor communicator or are represented by ineffectual media, videos, and websites, then you’re doing your business a disservice. If you want to make a lot of money you have to change attitudes, alter perceptions, and influence people, and you can only do that if you communicate effectively.

Comparing Flash Mp3 Players To Hard Drive Mp3 Players

According to the music, audio and video loving public, MP3 players are one of the greatest creations ever invented. They not only allow you to build humungous sound file libraries, but you can also take those files with you and listen to them wherever you go, whether it’s into the next room or an entirely different country. And actually, it’s not only sound files that you can travel with. The MP3 player market has greatly expanded to include mini digital screens that allow you to store and watch videos and keep and display photo ‘albums’ as well. It doesn’t get much better than that in terms of convenience.

And although MP3 players are a great convenience and are not difficult to use, there are differences between them, specifically in terms of their inner workings. Let’s take a look at the technological differences to get a better idea of what this means.

Hard Drive Based MP3 Players

Also referred to as Digital Jukeboxes, a hard drive based MP3 player can incorporate, nowadays, up to a 100 gigabyte memory card. That’s an awesome size providing an abundant amount of space to store all of your digital files. A hard drive based MP3 player affords you with the opportunity to download and store all of your music and other digital files directly into your MP3, where they will remain for safe keeping and your listening and viewing pleasure until you either delete them, add to them or copy over them. Once the hard drive is full, it’s full, however it would take a very, very long time and an enormous amount of digital files to fill up 100 gig hard drive.

There is also something called a micro-hard drive MP3 player that is available as well. These have a smaller memory capacity, but are also much lighter than the MP3 players with the larger hard drives.

Flash Based MP3 Player

Flash based MP3 players are latest craze to hit the portable audio and video device market. Unlike the hard drive based MP3 player, a flash based player only provides you with up to 4 gigabytes of memory on each card, but those cards are interchangeable. So you can still collect music, videos and photos with a flash based MP3 player, however they don’t have nearly the same amount of storage space. But as mentioned, you can change the flash card as frequently as you like, almost like changing a CD on your stereo. Keep in mind that you need special, additional, compatible equipment such as a flash reader for your computer in order for you to be able to download the digital files and then transfer the card to your MP3 player.

Changing Mp3 Download Laws in the Global Market

One of the nicest things about online music downloads is that people now have freedom when it comes to which MP3 player they want to use and which MP3 music download site they want to use. The technology is very new, though, and the industry has had some shaky times. One case is last year’s decision in France to make online music downloads compatible with multiple music players.

During the March of 2006, the national assembly in France voted by a landslide to give residents more freedom when it comes to MP3 music downloads. They said consumers should have the right to download music to MP3 players of their choice, not the player that the site wants them to use.

For the first time, consumers could download music to an iPod from stores other than iTunes, or to download music from iTunes France to other types of MP3 players. “It’s good for the market,” said Alexander Ross of media law firm Wiggin. “It enables all digital music retailers to compete on a level playing field.”

This is one example of how the MP3 music download technology is changing with the times and suiting consumers’ needs. There’s no reason that one MP3 download company should dominate a whole market, according to many economists in France and around the world. The iPod is definitely the most popular MP3 music player, but consumers want the freedom to get MP3 music downloads from a variety of sources that will still be compatible with the iPod.

“Someone who buys a song has to be able to listen to it, no matter which device or the software of choice,” said Martin Rogard, adviser to the French culture minister. He added that the previous system for online music downloads in France was “not in the interest of the consumer, nor the interest of the creator. It only benefits the company and we’re there to defend the consumer, our citizens.”

The decision in France may have had some effects on the music recording industry in general when it comes to online music downloads. There are now many more MP3 music download sites than ever before, and they can offer MP3 music downloads that will play on an iPod or any other portable player. It is a good thing for consumers, and it may also be a good thing for the music recording industry.

If consumers have more methods of downloading music available to them, music industry executives and artists will have more chances to profit from the copyright fees. With more compatibility, more MP3 music download sites will open up. And if they want to be legit, they have to pay the copyright fees. Giving freedom of choice to consumers simply makes for a more fair market.

How to Really Sell Cds Online

I’m about to tell you a new and highly effective way to sell CDs online from your own website. However, I do want to share this knowledge with you because it works. Unlike other motivators, gurus or success coaches, I will never give you academic theories, untried or untested ideas. On the contrary, in fact, the only ideas I will share with you will be those that I have personally tried out and had success with. That’s why I get excited, because I see results, and mostly they are light bulb moments. “Why on earth didn’t I think of that before?” is usually the afterthought.

Over the last seven years I have had an enormous amount of success both as a musician and as an Internet marketer. I say that not to brag, but because I want you to to know that if I can do it, then so can you. We are living in a new age. Truly, the geek will inherit the earth. I guarantee that only the proactive ‘details oriented’, ‘out-of-the-box-thinkers’ will really have success over the next few years. Watch if you don’t believe me.

OK, so where do we start? Do you have a website? Good. Do you have a web designer? If so, he or she must read this because for the most part web designers are not Internet marketers, they make pretty web pages. If you do your own web work (and I highly recommend that you learn), all the better.

I am now going to propose to you that you now have two websites dedicated to your band or act, instead of just one. First, you must have your ‘calling card’ website. You know, your site at www.yourdomain.com that contains all the good basic info about you that fans can read. I’ll talk about the other site in a moment.

Ideally visitors should be finding your main website from a ton of inbound links from other sites. Rather than just getting any old link from another site to point to you, do all that you can to get a ‘golden’ link. By this I mean a highly visible link on a highly trafficked page. Do a joint venture if needs be by promoting their site from yours and so on. But get good solid substantial links from other sites whose demographic would be interested in you. Ask those questions!

If you want to score high in the search engines, make sure that other sites display your keyword in their anchor text. In other words, if you want to score high in Google when someone searches on ‘punk bands’, then make sure that that keyword is in the anchor text of the inbound link. OK, now you have a steady flow of traffic to your website. Of course you need to make the site fascinating and seductive. Here’s what you need to understand about your site;

The only reason you have a website online is to collect names and email addresses so you can direct market to your fans!

Sure you want to tell them where and when you will be playing, show them photos etc. But effectively, you do this by direct marketing through email, forming a personal relationship with your fans one by one. And they will love you for it. More on this in a sec.

So the trick now is to figure out how to capture a new visitor. How do you seduce them into your lair? so to speak. Once you have a committed, interested new fan, you can turn this new person into a purchaser, and if you do it right, a fan who will purchase from you time and time again. You do want to make money as a musician, right?

So the secret is getting them to give you their name and email address so your automated system can do the rest. Enter the second website I was just telling you about…

The second website is what we can refer to as a ‘Member’s Area”. Most commercial or corporate online sites that have a member’s area charge a recurring fee to be admitted. You however, are not going to do that. Your member’s area will be absolutely free. All they have to do is subscribe. When they subscribe, they get access to this other site (which can be all part of the same domain) and of course you then have autoresponders set up so you can, over the course of a period of time (usually about 2 weeks), seduce them into buying from you. Works like a charm. Read on…

OK, so this member’s area sounds really cold and lifeless doesn’t it? Doesn’t even sound particularly interesting. This is where you have to put on your creative hat. Don’t call it a member’s area. Personally, I call mine “Backstage”, but you could call it anything you like. How about “V.I.P. Only”. Or “Private Invite Only”. Imagine you are opening a really hip new nightclub and you want only a certain style of person there. Imagine a selective New York nightclub where there is always a line outside and only the beautiful and famous people get to come in. By the way, did you know that there is never usually a need for a line outside a nightclub? How many times have you lined up for half an hour, then been admitted and walked into a half full club? The club is creating a perception that they are extremely popular. But no, all clubs do it because it makes them look good. Adopt this way of thinking for your website. Make it a real ‘inside thing’. Kind of like you have to know somebody to get in. There is a website called www.smallworld.com who have successfully done this, and everybody of course is clamoring to be a part of this highly exclusive place. It is brilliant marketing.

So think about this other new site of yours. What do you call it? How will it be? What do fans have to do to get in? Think about this. It’s your world. Make it fascinating and exclusive. Then build this other member’s site and make it something folks want to come back to. The truth is, you now have their contact info so it almost doesn’t matter to you what they do, but you do want them to remain in your world, so think about what you could do to grab their attention. I’ll give you some ideas.

Your main website will have all the basic stuff like; About you, bio, photos, tour info, subscribe to newsletter, blah blah blah. All good stuff. But this other private site of yours has to contain highly personal, intimate and fascinating stuff that fans can pore over, that they can’t get from your main site. In short, there has to be a seductive and ’slam dunk’ reason why a visitor would give up their contact info. Let’s face it, with spam issues, it takes a lot these days. Here are a few ideas.

We are living in a youtube world right now. There is every reason to make videos and it’s easy to do, and dirt cheap. So…

*Have a band member shoot video of you before and after gigs, hanging out, sound checking, chatting to fans, doing stupid and embarrassing stuff. Make youtube videos and embed them on your VIP member’s site.

*Make audio interviews for fans to click on.

*Have a photos library and build it over time.

*Have a reading room where fans can read glowing (and not so glowing) reviews of your albums and shows.

*Have a band blog or message board where fans can personally interact. Make all band members participate. Build personal relationships with your fans.

*Give away free music.

*Think of anything else fun and creative that fans would want to see in your private room online.

If you are the meek or mild type,you know, all introverted and shy and bashful. Here’s what I have to say to you; Turn that around pal, because you have to be larger than life! Fans want it that way. They want stars and they want to put their stars on pedestals and worship them. Even if you feel a little insecure in this department, do not translate that online. BE LARGER THAN LIFE! The reason I say this is because you have to be confident enough to think that your fans actually want to know more about you.

OK finally, you have completed your private member’s room. On your original website (www.yourname.com) you are going to coax your visitors to your private site area. You can do this on every page of your original website. In the top far right of all my web pages their is a seductive script that makes you want to click on the link that takes you to the Backstage sign up page. You could also place banners and clever text links wherever appropriate. Be creative here.

This whole private member’s area is an intriguing idea for visitors because up until now, most bands offer things like “Subscribe to our newsletter so we can tell you where and when we are playing”. Is this enough anymore? Absolutely not. We have to be creative.

And what do you do when you have your new fan’s contact information? You set up a series of autoresponders that do all the work for you. What this essentially means is, a series of emails written by you personally that gets sent out over a period of time that you specify. Once a week over a period of say 7 weeks, seems to work. You set up these emails like newsletters where you talk about different things your band is doing, or has done. Mostly over time you are going to talk about your CD(s) that you want them to know all about and of course preview and finally buy. Anytime you have something new to tell your fans, you send out a broadcast email. Whenever your new CD comes out, you have a growing list of subscribers to sell it to. Direct targeted online marketing. This is the world you now live in.

The Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) is a multi-venue arts center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, which opened on October 3, 2008.
The director of EMPAC is Johannes Goebel. He was previously the director of the Institute for Music and Acoustics, which he founded at the Center for Art and Media Technology (ZKM) in Karlsruhe, Germany. EMPAC’s curators are Helene Lesterlin (Dance), Kathleen Forde (Visual Arts), and Micah Silver (Music). The building is named after Curtis Priem, co-founder of NVIDIA and graduate of the RPI Class of 1982, who donated $40 million to the Institute in 2004.
Construction
The institute announced plans for the construction of a new performance hall in fall of 2001 with construction costs originally slated at $50 million. After a design competition and discussions with architectural firms, the plans were revised with a new construction cost of $141 million and completion date of some time in 2006. While most agreed that RPI needed improved music and arts facilities, the expanded size and construction cost were seen as unnecessarily expensive by many students and faculty.
The project broke ground on September 19, 2003. During 2004 the Institute began a large capital campaign and Rensselaer alumnus and trustee Curtis Priem, ‘82 donated $40 million in an unrestricted gift. RPI decided to officially name the project in his honor. Additionally, the Institute received a $1 million gift for EMPAC programs from alumnus David Jaffe in 2006.
Over 100,000 cubic yards of earth were evacuated from the hill to make room for the structure. RPI has had problems in the past with the instability of the ground on the hillside, a phenomenon known as mass wasting. To prevent the EMPAC from “sliding down the hill”, 215 rock anchors where drilled into the ground to stabilize the foundations. At over 210feet (64m) long, they are some of the largest anchors in North America.
In September 2005, the institute hosted EMPAC 360: On Site + Sound, a multimedia and performing arts presentation to celebrate the midpoint of construction. The event was attended by over 3000 people from the region. The expected completion date was moved to sometime in 2008. In January 2008, RPI commissioned lighting designer Jennifer Tipton to create a large lighting display called “Light Above the Hudson”. Operational for several weeks, the display drew attention to the center with a 300 by 100-foot (30m) array of multicolored lights and search lights pointed into the sky.
The grand opening celebrations were held on three weekends from October 3ctober 19, 2008, with all events free to the public. The inaugural concert on October 4 included the Albany Symphony Orchestra with pianist Per Tengstrand, the International Contemporary Ensemble and Vox Vocal Ensemble. Performances were also given by the Norwegian group Verdensteatret, the Japanese collective Dumb Type and a duet performance by pianist Cecil Taylor with Pauline Oliveros. October 11th featured Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, and October 18th featured the Roy Haynes Fountain of Youth Band. Each weekend also contained numerous lectures and workshops including Johannes Goebel and Pauline Oliveros. Studio 1 Goodman Studio/Theater hosted a special 360 degree film by The Wooster Group entitled There is Still Time..Brother alternating with screenings by Workspace Unlimited.

The design architect for the EMPAC is Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners, London and New York, designers of The Eden Project, the Royal College of Art, and International Terminal Waterloo. The architect of record is the New York City architectural firm Davis Brody Bond.
The main concert hall seats 1,200, and has been lauded as one of the most acoustically perfect concert halls in the world.[citation needed] The acoustical firm Kirkegaard Associates was contracted to work on the system. Extensive computer modeling was done of the ceiling canopy before construction to optimize the transmission of sound waves. EMPAC is the first venue to use a Nomex fabric for a ceiling canopy to reflect sound waves. The exterior of the main concert hall is lined with 36,000square feet (3,300m2) of Western Red Cedar. Grown in sustainable forests in British Columbia, the wood was chosen for its fire-retardant properties.
EMPAC is also home to a 400-seat theater with an 80? x 40? stage, 60? fly tower, computer controlled rigging, and one of the largest projection screens in New York.
